Follow up on the Wildman Committee Hearings

Long awaited meetings on the Pacifica crisis were held by the Legislative Audit Committee at the beginning of February. The Committee will begin drafting a report on their findings resulting from the hearing that took place in Oakland on August 20, 1999. Representatives of members of the Committee tell us that a draft report will be completed in three to four weeks. The final report should be ready about one month after that.

Apparently Pacifica has supplied all requested documents. We hope the Audit Committee report will reveal details and recommend changes in the way Pacifica does business. We have been told that the final report will be posted on the internet and that hard copies will be available in Sacramento.

PNN News Replaced by Free Speech Radio News

On Friday, February 11th, the organizers of the Pacifica Stringers’ Strike produced an alternative newscast that aired on KPFA and nine other community radio stations. The new newscast is called Freespeech Radio News. It can be heard at: http://www.savepacifica.net/index.htm . KPFA has begun using reports from this new source on their own news programs. These details from Leigh Hauter of the Alliance for Progressive Radio, Washington D.C. "There will be a Friday night meeting of the people coming in from out of town at Luna Books (on P St NW between 16th and 17th). Saturday morning at 11:00 there will be a forum at the Unitarian Church located on the 1600 block of 16th Street NW. This church is several miles and a long, long trip by mass transit to the board meeting. The Board meeting is over in Arlington, VA, in the Crystal City area. We will be working to get locals out for the forum and for the public hearings. The site of the board meeting is not conducive to a demonstration. Most of the Crystal City hotels don't even have sidewalks. One of our members who works at WPFW is trying to get them to cover the board meeting live (I said, good luck)."

MFB at UCR

Thirty feminist academics from California colleges and universities signed a letter protesting Mary Francis Berry’s expected appearance as keynote speaker at "Women's Conference 2000: Forging an Extraordinary Century for Women" to be held at UC Riverside, March 24th and 25th. "We believe that you share our commitment to democratic values, and in light of these values we urge you to withdraw the invitation to Berry," the letter reads. It was authored by Kay Trimberger, Coordinator and Professor of the Women's Studies Program at Sonoma State University and Lauren Coodley, Founding Member and Instructor, Women's ReEntry Program and Women’s Studies, Napa Valley College. It was addressed to Dr. Adrienne Sims, Co-Chair, Chancellor's Advisory Committee on the Status of Women and Director of the Women's Resource Center at the University of California, Riverside.

Dr Sims' who runs the Women’s Center, responded, "When I invited Dr. Berry, I did not know about the Pacifica controversy. And indeed, many of the issues raised by Pacifica employees, such as due process and democratic decision-making, are issues that concern me greatly. However, recent history does not erase Dr. Berry's leadership in the arena of civil rights. She is a woman of substance, someone who has made history as well as witnessed it. She is an African-American woman who has risen to a position of power in the U.S., against considerable odds. I must honor the contract I signed for Dr. Berry's appearance, not only because I am legally required to do so, but because it would be wrong to silence her on a university campus devoted to diverse views and opinions."

"Basically, she defended her choice of Berry and refused to reconsider her invitation," Coodley commented. "She claims that perhaps a dialogue can be opened at the event, but I am sure that it will be structured to avoid such dialogue." Coodley plans further action. "I would like to get the letter printed in the [UCR] student newspaper, and am currently getting ad rates, since they won't print a letter with multiple signatures," she said. "I'm afraid it [Sim’s response] fooled quite a few of the signers -- she had chosen not to respond to individual letters from both Kay and myself a month earlier."

KPFA Fund Drive Ends Early

The Winter KPFA Pledge Drive ended a day and a half early during the noon - 1:00 PM Living Room Show on February 16th. It was at the end of Kris Welch’s show that an amount of $475,000 was realized. Pacifica National Board member Tomas Moran joined many others to recommend an early end to fund raising. "I am strongly recommending that the raised amount for the February 2000 fund raising marathon should be kept at $450,000," he said "If this goal is reached before the end of the marathon, fundraising should stop at $458,000. This amount is 4% over the fundraising goal. Money raised over and above the yearly budget is not, under current board and management practice, made available to the stations until the following fiscal year. This means that the surplus raised in the October 1999 Marathon and any surplus raised in this marathon is not usable by KPFA until after October 2000, and only then at the discretion of the board and management. KPFA is carrying a substantial amount over budget from the October 1999 marathon. Adding to this amount without being able to see its effects is counter productive unless we can guarantee a change in board and management practice."
