When North Bay for KPFA first decided to publish the Folio, we envisioned it being an interim project, one that would circumvent the gag rule imposed by that mistress of discipline, Mary Frances Berry, while keeping us all abreast of the reprehensible conduct of the Pacifica Board. It was a project to last until Pacifica would once again fund production of the Folio.
With twelve editions and two years behind us in this struggle, we've hit the wall. This may be the last Folio to be published by North Bay for KPFA. We had hoped that by having a quarterly publication with more of a national focus that we could work through the ever-increasing burn-out factor. But what we discovered is that burn-out is only part of the difficulty in continuing to put out a quality and timely Folio. Material quickly becomes outdated; almost all of the action currently is taking place at the other Pacifica stations; it's difficult to coordinate getting volunteers from those stations to write reports about their activities; and more frequent reporting and updates of legal proceedings are available on-air and on numerous websites. So--what to do? One idea we've batted around is an on-line Folio. (All past issues of the Folio are currently on-line at http://www.ringnebula.com/folio.) This eliminates many of the current problems we face such as the cost of printing and postage, timeliness of articles, deadlines, etc. Of course the lack of a hard copy is a problem for those who are not computer-literate. Are there others in the various listening areas who want to pick up the production of the Folio for now? Can the national alliance movement use the Folio concept? Once Pacifica is returned to its rightful owners--us, the listener/supporters--the Folio, or something like it, should become an instrument of Pacifica to unify and solidify the five stations that comprise it. Until then we leave open the future of a listener/supported Folio to the creative energies that will guide its next unfolding.
