ON AFGHANISTAN:An Open Letter
To President Obama,
Re: your recent comments about war in Afghanistan as you accepted the Nobel Peace Prize.
As you know, US combat in Afghanistan is not about "fighting terrorism." It is now and has always been about securing land for oil and natural gas pipelines to cross from the oil rich Caspian Sea Basin through Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and to Pakistani seaports for shipping to energy hungry and dollar rich China.
The argument that a people's anger and violent resistance to occupation and/or theft of their resources can be controlled through military violence and occupation is false on the face of it. Occupation and the violence needed to sustain it have always generated violent responses within the violated and the occupied.
Your referring to a subset of angry Middle-Eastern people simply as "terrorists," rather than people defending their homeland and way of life is disingenuous. Your choice of words is unmistakably calculated to justify the continued stationing of troops atop oil bearing sands, all to protect the flow of petro-cash to the very few and the very powerful. How terribly sad that you have chosen to apply your giftedness to people and to a cause such as this.
